Otoplasty
Ear reshaping for improved proportion and symmetry.
Overview
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes, repositions, or reduces the size of the ears to achieve better proportion and symmetry. Dr. Kieu performs otoplasty with meticulous attention to the complex cartilage structure, creating natural-looking ears that complement facial features.
Who This Is For
- Children (age 5+) and adults with prominent or protruding ears
- Individuals with misshapen ears due to congenital conditions
- Patients with asymmetry between the ears
- Those seeking correction of earlobe deformities or stretched piercings
Who This Is Not For
- Children under age 5 whose ear cartilage is not yet stable enough
- Individuals with active ear infections or unhealed piercings
- Patients with unrealistic expectations about perfect symmetry
- Those with keloid-forming tendencies without prior discussion of risks
The Process
Consultation: Dr. Kieu evaluates ear anatomy, cartilage strength, and discusses your aesthetic concerns. For children, the procedure is often discussed with parents to ensure the child is a willing participant.
Preparation: Standard preoperative clearance is obtained. Instructions are given regarding medication and activity restrictions.
Surgery: Performed under general anesthesia (children) or local anesthesia with sedation (adults). Incisions are hidden behind the ear. Cartilage is reshaped and secured with permanent sutures to create the desired position.
Recovery: A headband or dressing is worn for several days to protect the ears. Most patients return to school or work within one week. Strenuous activities are restricted for 3-4 weeks.
